In October, I spent a couple of hours with local lifeguards on night duty for a story about how their positions might be affected by city budget cuts.

It was an interesting evening. Even though the lifeguards weren’t diving into rough currents saving a drunk who had toppled off of the Ocean Beach pier, it was easy to imagine how harrowing the task would be when they faced those types of predicaments.

We cruised around on patrol for about an hour and I attempted to hold my camera as still as possible so I didn’t have to use my flash. There were beautiful orange tints coming off the sky and I didn’t want to kill the mood of the images with a big white flash. Here are some of my favorite outtakes.
