John Lynch and Doug Manchester have both been described as “devout Catholics.” I must confess that as a cradle Catholic and serious student of Roman Catholic teachings, I do not understand what is meant by “devout” in today’s diverse atmosphere.

In years past the word has had the tinge of “holier than thou” about it, and even now that general sentiment lingers. Does “devout” mean strict adherence to form? Or does it refer to an effort to live out in very practical ways the elementary principles of Christianity?

One can only hope it means that we can expect The San Diego Union-Tribune to facilitate a whole new era of social justice, honesty and respect for all citizens and a serious commitment to the good of the entire community. Is that too much to ask from wealthy men with good principles?
