We both call ourselves the “voice of San Diego,” this organization where I’ve been a reporter since 2006, and the 120-person choir that sings often with the symphony, the San Diego Master Chorale.
We share that “voice of” mantle peaceably, so long as we don’t start a choir, and they don’t start a newspaper.
But this week, we teamed up to put singing and news headlines together. The choir recently sang in San Diego Symphony’s performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the fourth movement of which features the choir singing the tune more commonly known as “Ode to Joy.” I took up the challenge to put some new lyrics to the old tune, giving an overview of the top news stories in San Diego in the past year and the year to come.
Our friends at NBC 7 San Diego enthusiastically joined in; we’ll have video for you this week. Listen and watch as the choir sings those headlines to life on Thursday afternoon soon after 4:30 p.m. on NBC7 San Diego. We’ll post a clip here as soon as possible.
