I’m reporting this week from San Diego City Council’s Third District.
I’m not quite sure how Billy Joel would lyricize it, but just look at all of these uptown and downtown neighborhoods: Downtown, East Village, Gaslamp, North Park, Hillcrest, South Park, Golden Hill, University Heights, Normal Heights, Burlingame, Mission Hills, Old Town, Bankers Hill, Little Italy, and that’s not even all of them.
Some of these neighborhoods find themselves grouped together for the first time under the new maps for city districts that will go into effect after the next election. The biggest change is that downtown is no longer grouped with the beaches and is instead tied together with the nearby uptown neighborhoods. Todd Gloria, the district’s current councilman, is running without a challenger for reelection.
Obviously I could spend a week in each of these neighborhoods. But what I’m hoping to do is learn some of the things that you think city government could do to make your life better. I’ll write about the themes and tell some of your stories that arise from these conversations during the week. Then I’ll take your questions and concerns to Gloria and find out how he plans to address them.
So, do you live there? Please, get in touch with me. Tell me if there’s something happening in your neck of the woods one morning or afternoon or evening this week. A park cleanup, or a meetup. Do you and your neighbors walk your kids to school at the same time? Let me come walk with you, or meet up with you for coffee.
Leave me a comment here, email me at email@example.com, or call me at 619.981.0902. I’ll post some of my happenings on Twitter, so you can find me over at @kellyrbennett. I’ll be posting when I’ll be in a café so you can stop by to say hi if you’d like.
Meanwhile, one of the major connecting thoroughfares through this district is having its monthly walkabout tonight. Here’s the latest info on 30th on 30th. If you go, tell us about your night out.
