That’s the problem today. The parties are supposed to represent the people but today people are expected to represent the parties. Makes you wonder who’s running the place.
• Rick Brooks on “Where the Sidewalk Ends in Mission Hills“:
Kelly (Bennett), maybe you see this in every neighborhood these days, but it has literally been decades since the streets in Mission Hills were paved. Every once in a while they come through, dig a couple of trenches for whatever, and then maybe put a bit of slurry on them to smooth the bumps, or a touch of asphalt. But drive up Juan Street and down Sunset. These are supposed to be major thoroughfares and they are AWFUL!
Crossing Washington anywhere as a pedestrian can be a scary proposition too, let alone walking down to the commercial district on India. From Goldfinch to India, Washington is basically a freeway (and drivers treat it as such). In fact, I live on Sunset and won’t allow my kids to walk to the (seriously run-down) library — it’s just too dangerous.
Finally, cars whizzing down Sunset or Fort Stockton will frequently hit 60mph (it’s a 25 zone), especially in the evenings when the traffic cops aren’t around.
Mission Hills has it’s issues, but it’s still one of the best places to live in the city!
• Kevin McGovern on “The Bay’s Overlooked Pollution Problem“:
So many of our issues are really just about enforcing the laws that we have on the books. Alcohol, pollution, speeding all cause much death and destruction but there are laws that should prevent much of this…time to get serious about enforcing them. You don’t always need to make a new law (although banning copper and other such harmful pollutants from paints, I would agree with).
• William Smith on “Filner Should Have Just Defended Pensions“:
I think (Bob) Filner should note that city pension “reform” has occurred already. For example, employees hired in the past several years receive a much lower benefit than those hired before, even lower than most other public agencies pay. They are not eligible for DROP or buying 5-years airtime AND no increase in benefits can occur without a vote of the people. What (Carl) DeMaio is pushing is pension “destruction,” since 401k’s are not pensions all all. I don’t believe this will affect the city’s ability to hire most new employees, but if they want to look outside for a department head or other higher official, this will cause problems. They may also have trouble filling firefighter positions. The switch to 401k plans that has widely occurred in the private section may result in the impoverishment of the elderly in the future.
• William Moore on “Six Highlights from District 1’s First Debate“:
That’s the Sherri Lightner we know and love. The other guys look smooth, and then have to admit that they don’t know the issues. Sherri looks uncomfortable, but knows every inch of the district.
Folks up here in D1 like our public servants working, not just talking. That’s why Sherri’s perfect for us.
