More than 130 people packed into Bird’s Surf Shed last night on Morena Boulevard for the premiere of our One Voice at a Time conversation series. Our first guest was former City Councilwoman Donna Frye, who also donated seven pieces of her personal, election-inspired, artwork for silent auction. Top bidders Zack Warma, Dale Peterson, Mel Katz, Jean Walcher, Cher Pendarvis, Michael Tilley all took home Donna Frye originals.

A big thank you goes out to Frye and Eric Huffman, the owner of Bird’s who donated the space which doubles as a surf shop by day and a hip event venue by night.

Voice of San Diego members at the $101 giving level and above attended the event for free and enjoyed VIP seating. Many other attendees were introduced to VOSD for the first time. The diverse crowd included many of Frye’s fans from the surfing community, along with college students, retirees, and local leaders Nathan Fletcher, Pat Shea, George Plescia and Diann Shipione.

The casual conversation hosted by VOSD CEO Scott Lewis touched on many of the highlights of Frye’s career as a San Diego City Councilmember, her bid for mayor and her thoughts on this year’s race. Look for a full recap from Lewis in tomorrow’s Member Report. If you’re not a member, join now. This was the first of many One Voice at a Time events we’ll be hosting with San Diego’s big thinkers. Members will always get the VIP treatment, so don’t miss out.

Here’s what some folks were saying about it on Twitter:

George J. Janczyn: “I liked tonite’s #onevoicesd with Donna Frye because it brought so many strangers together who were friends.”

Dale Peterson: “It was fab. to have a Donna Frye refresher‪#onevoicesd‬ Her “Off Broadway Act 1″ was full of candor & humor. Holistic campaign relief.”

Omar Passons: “I see why Frye is loved by people outside the environmental community. Her open gov’t comments were on point. ‪#onevoicesd‬”

Who should we interview next? Send us your suggestions. We want to hear from you — because these events are for you. We’re trying to create opportunities that allow you to not only read about what’s going on in San Diego, but to also participate in the discussions. You are the Voice of San Diego.
