Of all the looming budget questions facing the city of San Diego, few could affect its pocketbook as much as than the unwinding of the state’s urban renewal program.

The city and state are squabbling over whether the city owes debts covered by its now-defunct redevelopment agency. If the city’s forced to make loan payments for the first Convention Center expansion and Petco Park, for instance, it could cost almost $80 million over the next five years.

I spoke with our media partners at NBC 7 San Diego about this for a story that took on the whole redevelopment mess. How it gets ironed out could determine how deep the city’s budget problems could go.
