Hirsch became homeless last year and wrote to me in December just before she stayed in a shelter for the first time. Friday, she moved into a room at a house run by Catholic Charities San Diego for homeless women 50 and older. She’s getting her bearings and blinking away the disbelief that she has a dedicated place to sleep and keep her things again.

“Now I am starting to feel like I’m not in survival mode as much,” she wrote Tuesday.
