With the Chargers gone, San Diegans have begun rallying behind San Diego State University’s football team, which for the last couple years has shown tremendous improvement.
But as the future of the former Qualcomm Stadium hangs in the balance, SDSU football is now left without a home.
For years, the university has utilized the space to host its homes games. Fans pay one dollar per ticket to help the university pay its rent. But the city of San Diego — which spends millions of dollars each year to maintain the stadium — wants to get rid of it.
Currently, there are two potential ballot measures on the table: One from developers who want to use the land to build SoccerCity and another from a group called Friends of SDSU that wants the city to sell SDSU the land.
While its likely that the two proposals will come before voters on the November 2018 election, SDSU football will need to find a place to play until then.
On this week’s San Diego Explained, Voice of San Diego’s Scott Lewis and NBC 7’s Monica Dean go through SDSU’s quest to find a new home for its football team.
