Over the past few weeks, hundreds of low-income San Diego students have been scrambling to find their next move, and in some cases, a place to sleep.
The feds are planning on closing all Job Corps centers run by private contractors. Job Corps offer low-income students academic training, support services and free housing. A center in Imperial Beach is on the chopping block.
Will Huntsberry and Jakob McWhinney report that the announcement has thrown hundreds of students at the Imperial Beach facility into chaos.
Hundreds of students living at the center left within days of the news. At least 100 remained.
San Diego County officials and local organizations have been working to get students into shelter and connect them with resources.
Politics Report: Before Budget Showdown, a Big Trash Vote

Tomorrow, the San Diego City Council is set to vote on a budget that includes more than $100 million in tough cuts.
A vote today will determine whether the cuts must go even deeper, our Scott Lewis reports in his latest Politics Report.
If the City Council doesn’t stick with a proposal to charge most homeowners a $47 monthly fee for trash collection, the City Council will have far less money to reverse proposed cuts to library and recreation center hours will be dashed – and a failure to approve the trash fee could be devastating.
Also in the Politics Report: Will Huntsberry details a new pitch to make housing cheaper in San Diego. And we heard from a man who hired a lobbyist to protect the city’s beach fire rings from budget cuts.

On a budget-related note: The Union-Tribune outlined city budget analysts’ proposals to try to bypass some proposed cuts, namely those to library and recreation center hours.
