Tuesday, June 20, 2006 | Several caveats prior to my comments. First, I proudly spent 12 years serving in the Navy, unfortunately none of those years here in San Diego. Second, I strongly support the proposed dual-use of Miramar for a commercial airport for San Diego, as well as for Marine Corps aviation.

Those caveats stated, I strongly disagree with the sentiments recently expressed by Vonn Marie May.

The Navy and Marine Corps are an integral part of the fabric of San Diego and the thought that they can ever be exculpated is nothing short of ridiculous. The Navy and Marine Corps’ role in San Diego may change with the coming years as the services are reshaped to the realities of the world around them, but San Diego is uniquely situated to provide the services necessary to the defense of this nation.
