Wednesday, June 21, 2006 | I think that there is an abundance of viable options, other than San Diego, for the location of U.S. military bases. The weather is just too nice in San Diego. Sailors and Marines may get soft in the benign climate in our little corner of the world. I think that an ideal location for the Headquarters of the Navy’s Pacific Fleet would be in Wahoo, Nebraska. Wahoo would be a real challenging locale to train members of the U.S. Navy.

No Eden-like weather conditions, year round in Nebraska. Yet, Nebraska is nice and flat, just like the oceans. The sailors would merely have to simulate sea water in place of fields of amber waves of grain. On the Atlantic, the Navy might work out a deal with the Cubans to triple the size of Guantanamo Naval Base, once Fidel leaves the scene. Cuba isn’t part of the United States, but that’s all the better! Why should San Diego have to be the site of our military bases? It’s just not fair.

So, Yankee, go home! End your occupation of San Diego. But leave your air bases behind.
