Friday, June 30, 2006 | Regarding Michael Grant’s suggestion that we build another airport for the low-cost carriers, perhaps at Brown Field.

He mentions the separate facilities in Dallas and Houston. Those airports are their old airports (their Lindbergh Fields). They are in-town – in cities where the major airport is way out of town.

The low-cost carriers, especially Southwest, are often used for short hops: San Francisco, Vegas, Reno, Phoenix. They only work if they are convenient. I’m delighted to pay Southwest’s cheap rate for a weekend jaunt up to Oakland, but the whole deal would lose its appeal if it took me three times as long to get to and from the airport. The same goes for weekend visitors to San Diego.

I love Grant’s stories and his usually out-of-the-box thinking, but he needs to rethink this one.
