From the Reporter
What We Did
With San Diego Unified asking for pay and benefit concessions from its teachers, we surveyed California’s 11 largest school districts to gauge how San Diego stacks up.
What We Found
Teachers in San Diego Unified are paid less than their counterparts at California’s other large school districts. They also enjoy free medical coverage, a benefit that many districts have been moving away from.
What It Means
So far, the teachers union has refused to come back to the table to renegotiate its contract. If San Diego Unified is to be successful in convincing its teachers union to compromise, our survey shows the district will have to ask them to take a step back even further on the salary rung when compared to their peers in similarly sized districts across California.
