Three challengers are campaigning this month to unseat District 1 City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner, who represents residents in the La Jolla, University City and Carmel Valley areas.

In this edition of San Diego Explained, we partner with NBC 7 San Diego to examine some of District 1’s biggest election issues and each candidate’s basic pitch to voters. (Thankfully none of us were bitten by rattlesnakes.)

For a more in-depth look at the District 1 candidates, check out our profiles of Lightner, Ray Ellis, Bryan Pease and Dennis Ridz.

Some of the biggest issues in District 1 include preserving parkland in Del Mar Mesa, adding fire stations in University City, smoothening sidewalks in La Jolla, smoothening streets in Carmel Valley and the proposed Regents Road Bridge across Rose Canyon. Many of them were discussed during an April 25 candidates’ forum.
