Mayor Bob Filner’s proposal to link our trolley system with San Diego International Airport makes perfect sense. Most major airports in the world are already connected to public transit. While our last mayor was a jolly good fellow, it appeared as if he was limited to a certain degree of provincialism with regard to international matters. Coincidentally, our last Democratic mayor, Maureen O’Connor, had literally laid the groundwork on our present trolley system by traveling to Europe in order to research and study the gauge of rail to be used.

Mayor Mo, as she was affectionately called, also provided our current bus shelters to shield folks from the wind, rain and sun. Both international and domestic travelers at our soon-to-be-expanded, world-class airport would welcome a light rail system as a means of reaching all points of our city. Are we ready for the 21st century? Filner is spot on in his vision for our future. Let’s get on with it!
