Former city attorney and mayoral hopeful Mike Aguirre has been something of an underdog in the race so far.

In fact, his odd-man-out status is one of the defining characteristics we’re highlighting in this week’s San Diego Explained.  The most public illustration came during a debate hosted by the Police Officers Association, where Aguirre set himself apart from the other candidates, who were touting staffing and investment increases for the department.

Aguirre said he wouldn’t pander to law enforcement. Instead, as NBC 7’s Catherine Garcia and Voice of San Diego’s Scott Lewis point out, the 64-year-old Democrat could be trying to make good on his reputation as someone who fights for the people.

Get to know the native San Diegan in the rundown below — everything from his bizarre behavior during the 2007 wildfires to his campaign promise he’s a “changed man.”
