On the latest episode of the VOSD Podcast, the crew takes a deep dive into the results of the primary elections.

From Ammar Campa-Najjar declaring an end to his political career to shifts in local political power, we break down what the results actually mean for the future of San Diego and California.

Nay to Measure A: The measure was championed by Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera, and would have placed a tax on homes left vacant for more than half of the year.

As of Friday, 57 percent of voters cast a ‘No’ vote. Below is a short transcript of our discussion on the Measure A results. (Edited for length and clarity.)

(37:24) Bella Ross: “Measure A was by no means a perfect measure. I’ve been kind of on the record over the past few weeks saying that this was more of an ideological battle than it was a policy battle in some ways, because the measure itself, you know, the impacts of it were kind of uncertain and like, even on the high end was gonna be a pretty limited impact on housing supply and city revenue.

And it was legally vulnerable because similar cases have been, are stuck in the courts up in San Francisco. I do think that there was some polling that you guys had reported on earlier this week that gives a little bit of weight to what Sean was saying, which was a poll that came out where 55 percent of San Diegans said that they would raise taxes on the wealthiest residents and companies to better pun fund public services.

So it seems like there is an appetite for this kind of thing was Measure A the wrong measure. Was this poll just off base? Is it the trust issue? I think there’s a lot of questions here, but I mean, this is an important reckoning to have, especially considering just a couple months ago people were saying, yeah, we can charge tourists for parking Balboa Park, but not residents. So this seemed like it would like kind of play into that sentiment and it just didn’t land.”
