Wednesday, April 4, 2007 | It is time for San Diegans to pay for trash pick up, and it is time for an increase in the sales tax. Donna Frye ran on a fiscally sensible platform, whilst Mayor Sanders ran on a politically populist platform. Such increases should be partnered with increased developer fees, and greater attention to revenue raising across the city.

It is shortsighted to think that San Diego can recover without bankruptcy and/or fees and taxes. Whatever the fiscal mess we are in we have to act before the services and infrastructure are so eroded that they are beyond recovery. The police force is already at that point — and that is costing individuals an unexpected “fee” as we pay to repair vandalism, broken windows, etc.

Mayor Sanders should have been honest when he campaigned.
