The Washington Monthly, a magazine, has rated San Diego’s MiraCosta College as No. 24 in its first annual ranking of community colleges across the nation.

For the past three years, the magazine has put out an alternative college ranking to compete with the popular ratings released by US News & World Report. (The Washington Monthly put the University of California, San Diego, at No. 4 this year.)

No other major publication ranks community colleges. According to the Washington Monthly, its scores are based on the results of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement, based at the University of Texas, Austin, and graduation rate statistics complied by the U.S. Department of Education.
