Carl DeMaio, who garnered almost 70 percent of the absentee votes in the race for the District 5 City Council seat, declared victory about a half hour ago at the Westgate Hotel.

“We celebrate the results of a year of hard work, and tomorrow the hard work begins again,” DeMaio told supporters.

George George is incredulous, and not ready to concede.

“That’s amazing,” George said when he heard of DeMaio’s speech. “Tell him God bless and I hope he doesn’t have to retract.”

After his speech, DeMaio said he was confident that the new council will have “five votes for the reform agenda,” but still refuses to name the candidates he supports in the other races.

“I said I would not endorse anyone until after June 3, and it’s not after June 3 yet,” he said.
