David Copley, the owner of The San Diego Union-Tribune, gave a late boost to the campaign to ban booze on San Diego’s beaches.

Copley donated $5,000 to the Safe Beaches San Diego campaign on Monday; his step-brother, Michael Copley, donated $8,000 on Oct. 23.

Their $13,000 represents a small percentage of what the booze-banners have raised. The campaign reported scrounging up more than $225,000 this year through Oct. 18.

The newspaper’s editorial page supported the booze ban.
