I just got an interesting press release: Students at Gompers Charter Middle School in Chollas View are celebrating the election of Barack Obama today with an all-school assembly to discuss the election and to watch the speeches of Obama and John McCain.

Afterwards the students will surround the school, holding posters they created about the election. Visitors can stop by and see the celebration at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. today. The election of the first black president has special significance for Gompers, where a majority of students are black and Latino. Heard of other celebrations, discussions and school commemorations of the election? Feel free to shoot me an e-mail at emily.alpert@voiceofsandiego.org.
