The woman in charge of the city of San Diego’s engineering, traffic and infrastructure services for all of Mayor Jerry Sanders’ tenure, Patti Boekamp, has resigned from her position.

Boekamp, the director of the Department of Engineering and Capital Projects, was one of the few department heads to stay on board after Sanders took office in December 2005. A city spokesman said she resigned for personal reasons on Oct. 1.

She will be temporarily replaced by Charles A. “Tony” Heinrichs who currently heads the Storm Water Department.

Boekamp became director in 2004, but has been a city employee since 1989.

While director of the department, Boekamp oversaw the initiation of numerous projects, including water, sewage and street improvements and library building projects, namely the new downtown Central Library.
