In this week’s election podcast, we look back on the June 7 election and what lies ahead of us in November.

We talk about how three city races heading to the fall have something in common. Each pits a more conservative or business-backed male candidate against a more liberal female: Barbara Bry versus Ray Ellis in City Council District 1; Ricardo Flores versus Georgette Gomez in City Council District 9; Robert Hickey versus Mara Elliot for City Attorney.

We wonder how that will play out.

We talk about conventional wisdom: Was it right? Not always, we saw.

We talk about the Union-Tribune’s endorsement. Did they sway voters? Not always, it seems.

Favorite Things

Our favorite things this week involve presidents.

I’ve been admiring and getting a bit wistful watching the 2014 Ken Burns documentary series on Eleanor, Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt.

Sara’s favorite thing is a recent article in Politico about Zachary Taylor, “an inexperienced, unqualified, loutish, wealthy outsider with ambiguous party loyalties,” who was the chosen candidate of the Whig Party in 1848.
