My story today on the work being done at the Shiley Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education to combat osteoarthritis provided a pretty good sense of Dr. Clifford Colwell’s current position at the forefront of the field.

But what the story doesn’t mention that Colwell, 72, is among the founding fathers of knee and hip replacement. In the 1960s, Colwell studied under Dr. John Insall, the man considered to be the pioneer of knee replacement in the United States. And since the early 1970s, Colwell has performed 8,400 knee and hip replacements.
